WASA Smog Campaign in Punjab
Smog has become a serious environmental challenge in Punjab, particularly during the winter months when stagnant air traps pollutants over major cities. In response, the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) has launched several anti-smog and public-awareness initiatives to reduce dust, improve urban conditions, and encourage citizens to adopt cleaner practices.
What Is the WASA Smog Campaign?
WASA’s role in the anti-smog effort includes practical measures such as water sprinkling on roads and development sites to control dust and reduce airborne particles. In Multan, for example, WASA intensified preventive measures and directed teams to sprinkle water regularly when air-quality levels exceeded permissible limits.
WASA Lahore has also continued water-sprinkling operations on major roads as part of its anti-smog activities.

Smog Awareness Activities
The campaign is not limited to road operations. WASA Lahore has also supported public awareness. In November 2023, WASA organized a Smog Awareness Family Ride with the commissioner’s office to encourage citizens to consider bicycles and greener transportation options. More than 200 people participated.
These activities highlight an important message: controlling smog requires participation from government departments, businesses, and ordinary citizens.
Why Is the Campaign Important?
Punjab’s smog problem has multiple sources, including vehicle emissions, industrial pollution, construction dust, and crop-residue burning. The province has therefore used a broader anti-smog strategy involving environmental monitoring, enforcement, agricultural measures, and public awareness.
WASA’s contribution is especially relevant in urban areas because controlling dust from roads and construction sites can help reduce one source of particulate pollution.
How Citizens Can Help
People can support Punjab’s anti-smog efforts by:
- Keeping vehicles properly tuned and maintained.
- Avoiding unnecessary burning of waste.
- Using public transport, cycling, or walking where practical.
- Reporting excessive smoke from vehicles or other pollution sources.
- Following official health advisories during periods of poor air quality.
- Supporting tree plantation and cleaner neighborhood initiatives.
Smog Campaign
The WASA Smog Campaign in Punjab represents one part of the province’s wider effort to improve air quality. Water sprinkling, dust control, awareness events, and public participation can all contribute to healthier urban environments. Long-term improvement, however, requires coordinated action against Punjab’s major sources of air pollution.
